Bio
Jasmine Morgan Ryan’s techno-romantic arts practice focuses on understanding our intimate relationship to nature and the cosmos. Her work draws attention to the invisible aspects that impact our existence and unite us, and the themes we struggle with in our humanity.
Working with Glass the celebrated material hero of the scientific world, her artworks interrogate a view through the darker-side of the lens into Anthropocentrism and its environmental impacts. This subversive undertone is explored through a select range of mediums and techniques incorporating NASA - made glass, hand blown glass, recycled materials, acrylic, silk, aluminium, steel, porcelain, watercolour, photography, painting and installation with an attention on light reflection and refraction.
“Framing a physical map of the ozone hole through a sculptural reimagining of one the core motifs employed by the European Romantics-especially J.M.W. Turner-is a stroke of genius... On approach we immediately 'read' Blind Spot as a work positioned within the lexicon of Romantic art; it is thrillingly beautiful-composed of sheets of translucent material it captures and refracts natural light to produce a shimmer of rainbow effects-but in its bulk and incongruous siting within a gallery space it becomes, if not terrifying somewhat alarming. The work is finished off with a mirror, suspended from high above, allowing viewers to see the sculpture from below as we would the actual ozone hole.”
– Gippsland Art Gallery Director Simon Gregg.
In her expanded practice Jasmine often collaborates with scientists from NASA, Earth Satellite Observing Centre (EOS), Antarctica, Monash and Melbourne University to create artworks that universally educate on the unseen and hard to fathom aspects of nature surrounding atmospheric disturbance, climate change, planetary limits, quantum entanglement and divination.
In 2018 Morgan – Ryan’s work As Above, So Below, on anthropogenic caused ozone eating clouds was profiled by the United Nations and World Meteorological Organization for COP24 Climate Change Conference.
Jasmine’s 2025 field of enquiry investigates the transitory process through which super-ecological phenomena become visible in the landscape. This body of work will explore the implication of newly visible anthropogenic weather phenomenon in Australia.
2025 Acquisition – Jasmine Morgan Ryan’s installation Blindspot, 2014 has been acquired by Gippsland Art Gallery for their new Climate Change art collection; the first in the southern hemisphere. Blind Spot will make its Gallery debut this winter as part of the major exhibition Turner & Australia and go on permanent display in Spring.
